FAQ Question: What are the typical symptoms of Crohn's? FAQ Answer: The typical symptoms of Crohn's disease are acute diarrhoea, anaemia, abdominal pain and weight loss. Very often it is mis-diagnosed, for example, the weight loss can be diagnosed as anorexia. The gastrointestinal tract becomes swollen, thickened and inflamed. The inflammation is characterised by a thickening of the intestinal wall which consequently makes the diameter of the lumen narrower. The exaggerated inflammatory response associated with Crohn's has not been determined. There are possibilities that it could be a specific pathogen, or a failure to control the mechanisms of inflammation. The complexity of the disease is vast, stretching into the domains of cytokiness (immunological), intestinal permeability and genetics. |
