Lifestyle - Bladder function

Tip Print Share
For some people, making a few simple lifestyle changes can reduce the symptoms of bladder dysfunction.

Diet
Certain foods and drinks can exacerbate symptoms of urinary frequency and urge incontinence – by removing or minimising these from your diet, you can improve, and sometimes cure these symptoms. Foods that may contribute to bladder problems include hot spices, citrus fruits and chocolate.

Drinks containing caffeine, such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate and fizzy drinks, cause excessive urine production and can enhance symptoms of frequency and urgency. Carbonated drinks, citrus fruit drinks, acidic juices and alcohol may also affect symptoms.

If you have to visit the bathroom several times a night or experience involuntary leakage whilst in bed, you may benefit from limiting your fluid intake in the evening. But consider that restricting fluids too much can actually irritate the bladder and contribute to incontinence.

If you are overweight reducing your weight to a healthy level should reduce the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence – a healthy diet and regular exercise is therefore recommended.

Exercise
Pelvic floor exercises (also known as Kegel exercises) can help to tighten and tone the pelvic floor muscles and reduce the symptoms of some types of incontinence.
