Travelling as a catheter user

The unfamiliar is often what makes travel exciting.

However, if you have a medical condition, you want certain things - confidence, hygiene and privacy - to stay the same.

Experiencing new things is often the reason for travelling — but when it comes to feeling secure and comfortable, it would be nice to keep the surprises to a minimum. Leaving your home base requires that you make some extra preparations for both your journey and stay. But no matter where you go, it doesn't have to hold you back.

Advice for travelling as a catheter user

Packing

Alongside your passport, suntan lotion and camera, you may want to pack the following:

  • Plenty of catheters - ensure you place your prescription order in good time

  • Hand hygiene supplies* - hand santiser or pack of wet wipes (you may wish to purchase a travel size sanitiser for your carry on bag)

  • Disposal bags* - for added discretion if you are sharing accommodation

  • Absorbent pads* - if you’re concerned about unexpected leakage overnight

  • Paper towels or tissues

* available from Coloplast Charter

Planning

  • Book an aisle seat close to the toilets so you have easy access

  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing that’s easy to open

  • Take a Travel Certificate* that explains to transport security that your bags contain medical devices

  • Look at your travel times and plan when to catheterise as it is important to stick to your routine

  • If you take medication, you may want to ask your Doctor for a copy of your prescription

  • Pack your supplies in both your checked baggage and carry-on

  • Take a No Waiting Card* that requests to use toilet facilities

Storing your catheters

Your catheters are best kept dry and at room temperature. However most catheters will not get harmed by being stored at temperatures below 0°C and up to 60°C for up to 24 hours. So, for example, you don’t need to worry about catheters being in your suitcase in the hold on a normal flight. If you are travelling somewhere that has extreme temperatures, please contact Coloplast Charter for advice.
