Letter to your local member of parliament (MP)

Writing to your MP is a good way to tell them about your problem. They might be able to help by speaking to others involved or to raise more awareness about the issue.

How to find your local MP: You can find out who your local representative is and their contact details by typing your postcode into https://members.parliament.uk/FindYourMP  or by using the TheyWorkForYou website.

  • Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own legislative bodies and people in those nations also vote for an MSP in Scotland, an MS in Wales, and an MLA in Northern Ireland.
  • Follow these links to find your representative if you live in: ScotlandWales or Northern Ireland.

Top tips for writing to your MP:

  • Keep your letter brief – no longer than two pages
  • Use the appropriate title for the recipient – MP, MSP, MS, or MLA
  • Make sure to include your full name, address, postcode, and email - MPs prioritise correspondence from their constituents, so including your full details allows them to verify this and respond to you
  • Make it very clear what action you would like your MP, MSP, MS, or MLA to take.
  • Once you have sent your email you may get an automated reply. This does not mean that the email will not be looked at, this is just acknowledging it.

You can use this as a starting point and adapt it to include your own experiences, details, and concerns. Please note this template is provided for general guidance only.
